An Experimental Study on Co-evolution of Categorical Perception and Communication System in Humans

Posted in Seminars by Tom Froese on September 7, 2011

The second Life and Mind seminar in Tokyo will take place on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4:00pm in Komaba, building 16, room 107. We are happy to have Hiro Iizuka from the University of Osaka. The title and abstract for his informal presentation are as follows:

An Experimental Study on Co-evolution of Categorical Perception and Communication System in Humans

I will present an experiment that attempts to conjugate the experimental semiotic investigation with the dynamical perspective on embodied social interactions. The reported experiment has the primary objective of studying the emergence of a communication system between two interacting individuals, where no dedicated communication channels are predefined and the only possible interaction is a very simple, non-directional, embodied interaction. Throughout the experiment, we will show the following three phenomena: (i) the spontaneous emergence of turn-taking behaviour, which allows communication in the non-directional environment; (2) the development of an association between behaviours and perceptive categories; (3) the acquisition of novel meaning by exploiting the notion of complementary set theory.

All welcome.
